If you've ever experienced a
plumbing emergency, then you know how terrifying it can be. Luckily, there are some things you can do to help minimize the damage and get things back to normal quickly. If things do get out of control quickly, here's what you should do...
The first thing you need to do is stop the water from flowing into your home. If there’s a possibility of a burst pipe, shutting off the water will help to ensure there’ll be no flooding in your house. If you can only see a leak in a certain area then you just need to turn off the water for that area. If you don't know where the main valve is or can’t turn off the water, call a plumber.
Using a plunger can help to clear the blockage. Plungers work by creating a vacuum that sucks up water in your drainpipes and then expels it back out again. If you have a plunger that covers any size drain, this can help to unblock any drains that could be causing plumbing problems such as small blockages.
If you have a leak in your home, turn off the water at the valve first. If there is still a leak, use a wrench or pliers to turn off the pipe. You can also consider using an adjustable wrench to tighten the nut if you don't have pliers on hand. When attempting to repair leaks within pipes, remember that pressure can build up quickly when opening valves and turning on taps.
There are many different ways you can try and fix a plumbing issue using your own tools and equipment. One thing an emergency plumber wouldn’t recommend is pouring chemicals down your drain in the hope that it solves the issue. You might make the issue a lot worse as you don’t know what is clogging the drain.
If you've tried all of the above, and your plumbing problem is still not resolved, it's time to call an emergency plumber. A plumber can help you determine where the problem lies and make a proper diagnosis. They'll know how much work it will take to fix the issue and what materials they'll need to do so and then get started as soon as possible!
