You know you could run out of hot water if you use a lot of it in a short time frame, but there are some other surprising reasons why you’re running out of hot water. When it happens, it’s likely a clue that something is going on with your hot water system that needs to be addressed. Sidney & Richardson is here to help. Our licensed plumbers are trained to diagnose the problem and get it repaired for you. Here’s what might be going on.
The Tank is Too Small
Hot water tanks come in several sizes and the one you choose is dependent on how many people live in your home and how much water you each use on a regular basis. Larger families naturally need a larger tank. If you have one that’s too small, it can’t keep up with your usage and you’ll find yourself running out of hot water often. Upgrading to a larger tank is the solution to this problem.
The Thermostat is Malfunctioning
Your water heater has a thermometer, which is used to regulate the temperature as it heats the water inside. Sometimes, the thermometer is to blame when you’re not getting enough hot water. In this case, try resetting the thermometer or turn the temperature up just a bit. If those solutions don’t work, it’s time to let our professionals have a look.
You Don’t Have Good Insulation
If your pipes aren’t properly insulated, it could be interfering with producing enough hot water, especially when the temperature outside is cool. In some cases, you may also need to insulate the tank itself so that it can better regulate the temperature of the water. We can help you determine if you have enough insulation so that you can get it taken care of right away.
There’s Sediment Build Up in the Tank
Over time, minerals and other sediment tends to gather at the bottom of your hot water tank. Because it takes up space in the tank, it limits the amount of hot water that’s available at any given time. You can empty the tank and clean it out to remove most of this sediment or you can have a professional do it for. Keep in mind that an older hot water system may need to be replaced.
